Formulate a professional development goal based the needs that you have identified. This goal should be:
measurable/observable
should lead to improvement of teaching, student achievement, and/or improvement of learning environment.
should describe new knowledge or skills that you will acquire and how that knowledge/skill will affect the school/district setting.
linked to applicable Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards and elements, e.g. RIBTS 2.4.
In the space below, describe your professional development goal. In a second paragraph, use the information above to provide a rationale for your goal by explaining the personal need that it will address as well as how addressing this goal benefits your students and your school.
I. Professional Development Goal
To learn and implement useful literacy strategies in my science classroom.
The first goal that I would like to address as a new educator is to learn and implement effective literacy strategies in my classroom. Since I have begun teaching, I have come to realize just how many students have trouble with basic literacy skills. These skills include, but are not limited to, reading, writing, spelling, grammar usuage, and comprehension. I believe that using effective strategies will benefit, not only the students with IEPs and PLPs, but the general student population as well. This goal also addresses the needs of the school by helping to meet one of the targets in the school's improvement plan. The target states "To increase the percentage of students proficient in reading and writing on the NECAP assessment while decreasing the number of students who are substantially below proficient. Since my educational background has focused primarily in science, I feel that I am lacking in my knowledge of useful literacy strategies. This will also help me meet Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standard 1.2 which states "Teachers use a broad knowledge base to create interdisciplinary learning experiences."
Now that you have a PD goal, think about what type of learning opportunities you will participate in to address your needs. Use these links to investigate learning options:
Based on what you have found out, write a 1-2 paragraph narrative outlining at least two ways (PD categories) you will engage in engage in by the end of your first year of teaching. For each activity, explain how you think it will address the need that you have identified.
II. Professional Development Plan
The first step I will take towards meeting my goal will be to enroll in an additional course at the University of Rhode Island in literacy, or perhaps special needs. One of these classes should provide me with newly developed literacy strategies and techniques that I can then apply to my classroom. Since I am currently working on my Masters Degree in Education, these credits can also be applied towards the completion of this degree.
The second step that I will take towards meeting my goal is to attend any workshops or seminars being offered on the topic of literacy. Each time that I learn a new strategy, I will test it out in the classroom to see if it is effective in helping my students. I will also ask more experienced teachers what kinds of strategies they have found successful and research the topic on my own by searching the web and reading educational books. In time, I will find a list of literacy strategies which will work well in my classroom and meet my students' individual needs.
